WHAT IS AN ANCILLARY BOTANIC GARDEN
An ABG is when an institutional green space is used to hold activities typically conducted in Botanic Gardens. These include informal environmental education, public appreciation of plants, and community ties to their natural heritage.
The term Ancillary (intégré, مدمجة) is added to botanic garden to emphasize that ABGs are secondary and are not meant to affect the institution's primary business.
Institutions interested in using their green spaces as ABGs may organize different objectives; for example, they can promote native plants, show plants with historical significance, showcase plants with a landscape value, shed light on the ecological and environmental values of plants, or provide a display of plants with cultural, edible, or medicinal value.
The important thing is to offer an opportunity for people to learn about plants and nature in the community where the ABG is established.
ABOUT THE ABG NETWORK
The Ancillary Botanic Garden (ABG) Network is a partnership of schools, universities, public spaces, and private institutions offering their greenspaces and working together to offer informal botanical learning opportunities for the public.
ABG network institutions share expertise, resources, and best practices to ensure that they offer their visitors engaging botanical learning experiences.
