Affiliates or research affiliates are individuals appointed to a faculty, academic department, or center, without financial obligation on the part of the University, to carry out scholarly activities from which the individual as well as the academic unit and the University will benefit. Affiliates and Research Affiliates characteristically have no specific duties, and they hold at least a bachelor’s degree.
Appointment Duration and Conditions: Appointments may be made for up to one year and may be renewed. Appointments are made to academic departments or centers with approval of the Department Head or Center Director and the Dean of the Faculty or Provost. The conditions of an affiliate’s appointment, including support services provided by the academic unit, are approved by the dean or provost and outlined in the letter of sponsorship at the time of appointment.
Affiliates and research affiliates may receive sponsored email accounts, Internet access, library access, and borrowing privileges (if supported by the unit or paid for by the individual during the period in which they are in active status). However, affiliates do not have direct access to university services and are not eligible for benefits accorded to university employees.
